INTRODUCTION

The most common chronic lung conditions dealt with by primary care physicians and other health care practitioners are Asthma and Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease (COPD). These conditions are widely spread and affect a vast majority of our socio-economic environment and commonly through genetic associations.

 

PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING

The Purpose of this course is to give sufficient information to enable healthcare practitioners, wherever they are located, to provide professional care to people with Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This is useful for all Healthcare Professionals who work as hands-on practitioners.

 

TARGET GROUP

Registered Professional Nurses, Clinical Nurse Practitioners and Medical Officers.

 

MAXIMUM NO OF PARTICIPANTS

Minimum 10 up to a maximum of 20 participants per training session.

 

COURSE DESIGN

A one day interactive contact session with theoretical and practical components using adult learning principles.

 

COURSE CONTENT

The following topics will be covered: 

ASTHMA

  • Asthma in adults: – presentation, diagnosis, management and the difficult asthmatic
  • Asthma in special circumstances eg pregnancy, occupational asthma
  • Asthma in children: – presentation, diagnosis, management
  • The wheezy infant
  • Acute asthma: – diagnosis, evaluation and management
  • Peak expiratory flow measurements
  • Devices and techniques

  • ·    Differentiating COPD from Asthma
  • ·    How is anatomy and physiology affected in COPD?
  • ·    Lung Function Testing
  • ·    Diagnosing COPD: Clinically / Radiologically
  • ·    Complications of COPD
  • ·    Pharmacologic Management
  • ·    Non-Pharmcologic Management

TRAINING ASSESSMENT

Participants will be subjected to a written examination with a pass rate of 70% and practical assessment.

 

TRAINING ACCREDITATION

The training will be HPCSA applied for an estimated 12 CEU’s (subject to change) and is registered with Stellenbosch University as a competence short course on NQF level 6. The nursing participants who attend this course will receive 1 CPD point for Area of Practice.

 

CERTIFICATION

All participants who complete the course successfully will be awarded with CPD and certificate of completion.
